The holy Islamic month of Ramadan will be ending this weekend and Djibouti will celebrate Eid al Fitr, the breaking of the month-long fasting period. As this is a time of charity and food donations, there will be a marked increase of activities and crowds within the city center. There will be a prayer ceremony led by President Guelleh in the city as well as other similar gatherings taking place at a field near Hassan Gouled National Sadium and other open air venues including several in Balbala. It is also common practice for the Libyan Embassy to give food and gifts to the poor the morning of Eid. Groups of people have already been observed sleeping near the Libyan Embassy this week in anticipation of this gift giving.
Said, one of our bright Somali students at the Horn of Africa School of English, gave me this account of Eid al Fitr. In his words:
EID FITR is the day of thanksgiving to allah ,for giving hsi servants the opportunity to fast and to worship him in the montho of ramadan .on this day muslims leave their jobs ,wear clean cloths, offer special EID PRAYERS ,and after prayers go to visit one another and take part in the fastivilies.samll children wear beatful new cloths , and very busy enhoing the fastival .their angelic faces beam whith joy.
