Take Off

We loaded our bags at 11:00 a.m. onto the trucks to go to the airport. At 1:00 p.m., we all boarded the buses and off we went. Similar to Norfolk, we were greeted by many well wishers who gave us flags, "Dang It" dolls, snacks, and pizza among other items. It was a real surprise to us. By 3:00 p.m., we loaded the plane and headed off to Djibouti. We stopped in Maine to refuel and change crews and met the same reception from the community. Even as late as it was, they stood on either side of the isle to shake our hands and wish us well. I never expected this much support prior to us even leaving the United States. I couldn't have been more proud to be an American.
