Basically, the fish market has business for everyone and many Tanzanians with little hope of getting absorbed in full time employment, is now realizing sizeable incomes to improve their livelihoods.
Actually, there are enormous opportunities at the fish market since it offers various facilities such as sea shell craft centre where people make handcrafts and sell to the public.
Nevertheless, the fish market with an area of 14,776 square metres was designed to accommodate a total number of 1,000 traders but currently over 3,000 people were trading at the premises hence resulting in over crowding that has created other challenges such as congestion and generation of a lot of waste. The importance of this market is that it brings sellers and buyers and consumers in one place and they have facilities such as cold rooms to cater for the fishing industry and this helps those fishermen who can wait for the right price. The fishermen do not determine the price and the price of fish is not static. Fish is auctioned ands fishmongers bid for the price they want hence fishermen are not really rich people in this business because they just end up selling here but traders are able to take the fish to other market places in the city.
