At the English Discussion Group I learned something interesting about the way people are buried in Djibouti. Because people are not embalmed when they die, burials occur quickly and the funeral at a later time. When a person dies, the hands are placed under the head as if they are sleeping and the legs slightly bent. Then the body is wrapped and tied near the head, waist, and feet. A grave is dug with the head facing north. The body is layed to rest as if the person is sleeping. Then the sand and dirt is filled in followed by stones being placed on top. And like Christians, the Muslims believe they will be reunited with their loved ones on judgement day when they will go to heaven and live for eternity.
