English Discussion Groups

The English Discussion Group (EDG) program is an Embassy program that provides a platform for cultural exchange between Djiboutian students and American volunteers. The EDGs in Djibouti began in May 2005. Thousands of Djiboutian students have practiced English with Camp Lemonier volunteers. The military volunteers represent American diversity: enlisted, officer, single, married, divorced, male and female.

There are six active groups throughout the city, ranging from dowtown to Balbala. The EDG outreach program promotes U.S. interests by projecting a positive and diverse image of the United States through meaningful dialogue. EDG students range from the poorest of the poor to up and coming leaders of Djibouti. EDG is held in private English schools throughout Djiboutiville and students are encouraged to attend multiple schools free of charge. Direct, sincere dialogue results in freedom of speech, equality for women and idea exchange for economic development. These interactions, no matter how brief, leave a positive, permanent impression on the EDG participants and the public.
