English Discussion Groups

I attended my first English Discussion Group (EDG) at Alpha Radiation School tonight. The EDG program is a daily event sponsored by the U.S. Embassy. The streets were crowded with kids as our Camp van pulled in front of the school. The school quickly filled up with girls sitting in the front and boys in the back. The topic that the kids wanted to discuss tonight was two-fold: (1) Do you prefer a large family or a small family, and (2) What makes a marriage fail? Most of the kids said that they would prefer a large family. One girl said she would like to have 5 boys and 5 girls. The boys blamed the women for failed marriages and the girls quickly retaliated saying it was the mens fault. The boys most often blamed the women for not being home when the man came home - and the man then felt that she disrespected him by not watching the kids and being there for him. The girls blamed the men for having more than one wife as men are allowed up to four wives in Djibouti. It was a fun night and I learned a lot from listening to them.
