English Discussion Group

Enjoyed another visit to the Horn of Africa School of English. Tonight's discussion was on marriage traditions. In addition, I learned that for breakfast, Djiboutians cook a type of pancake; for lunch, rice and meat with a favorite being liver (preferably lamb), and a traditional dinner with soup at night. I also learned that they try and stay cool during Ramadan by pouring cool water over their heads, but they can not swim or drink during the day for the month of Ramadan. And finally, I learned that milking a camel is a tricky business. They have to do it fast and hard to avoid getting kicked by the camel. This young girl often sits beside me at the Discussion groups. She is quick to tell the group that she thinks that cooking is a shared responsibility that both the males and females should do. She said in her family, that her father and brothers all cook. Other males students quickly jumped in to say that cooking is a female role and not the males. It's fun to listen to the lively discussions. I always tell this young girl that she is going to be the first female President of Djibouti.
