We returned to Caritas to provide medical services to the street children of Djibouti. There really isn't any words to describe how wonderful these children are. Nor do the smiles on their faces show the struggles that they face every day. With unemployment at 60 percent in Djibouti, children often go hungry, hoping that their parents may find some work to buy food that day for them to eat. For the street children of Djibouti, finding food to eat each day is a struggle. Many don't have shoes to wear and rely on whatever donations they can just so they have clothes to wear. At night while we are tucked in our beds, these kids cuddle together on the streets, trying to find a safe place to lay their heads. Each week, we often see the same children, many coming in with simple scrapes and bruses, just needing a little care and attention. Others come in with more serious infections and injuries. The local hospital most often turns them away and their only hope is the medical attention they receive at Caritas. But despite their struggles, there couldn't be a more loving group of children with their smiles, their laughter, and their hugs. These are the faces of the children of Djibouti.
