Peltier Hospital - Djibouti City

Peltier General Hospital remains the largest hospital in Djibouti with 610 beds.  Surgical staff from Camp Lemonnier normally go to Peltier three times a week and assist with anywhere between three and ten different cases during the week.  Part of the whole idea of Commander, Joint Task Force Horn of Africa is building strong relationships in the community, and that is what we are doing. By helping train local medical personnel, we are hoping to bring more medical stability, and in turn create a higher level of health care for all Djiboutians.

Michaud medical team members from Camp Lemonnier started volunteering at Peltier hospital in the fall of 2007.  It was a privilege to continue the relationship once I assumed charge of EMF 15.  Since our team arrived, our surgeons have worked a variety of cases, including: prostate, kidney, bladder, tumor and trauma operations.

Local medical facilities such as Peltieri do not generally offer the standard of care available in more developed countries, although there are several French doctors who cater to the expatriate community. Visitors with medical problems are advised to contact the French military hospital, Boufard at 253-352-435 or 253-351-351 ext.4086 (ext. 297 for emergencies). Ambulance services are also run out of Boufard Hospital at 253-351-351 ext 9333.

Chloroquine-resistant malaria (a type known as falciparum) is present in Djibouti; use of prophylaxis is advised. HIV/AIDS is also a serious concern, especially among the urban population; approximately three percent of all Djiboutians are infected. There were several cholera outbreaks reported in 2009, occurring in Balbala (just west of Djibouti City) and in an area near the Ethiopian border.

A new 64 slice CAT Scan has been opened up.
